From the shadows came the dull thud of hooves against the dirt road. Moments later, the beast emerged and gave a gentle snort before pulling the carriage deeper into the forest.
The night air was chill, and winter's icy fingers crept into the coach to discover a man inside. He sat with his eyes closed, swaying with the gentle rocking of the carriage.
The gentleman was Mr Alexander Lovecrest, a solicitor from London. He was in his late fifties, clean-shaven, with short brown hair flecked with grey. His overcoat was marked with grime; his shoes were covered with mud. His journey had taken three days, but to him it felt much longer.
This was Alexander's first trip to foreign lands. In his youth, he had wanted to explore the world. But his wealthy clients had demanded his constant attention. Of course, Alexander was no fool and understood the importance of money. After all, he earned his living overseeing their estates and legal affairs. But his work had left him little time for travel, or anything else for that matter. However, after receiving a particular letter, everything suddenly changed.
A jolt brought him to his senses. He opened his eyes, glanced around, and sighed. Then, tapping his cane against the roof, he called to the driver. 'Is it much further?'
When the driver did not answer, his thoughts turned to what had brought him to this godforsaken place.
It had been almost two weeks since he discovered the letter on his desk. It was still sealed, which was odd, as his secretary usually opened his mail. But when he turned it over, he quickly understood why.
Written on the back, above the black wax seal, were the words Private and Confidential. Only to be opened by Mr Alexander Lovecrest.
The handwriting was scratchy and difficult to read. The envelope was yellowed with age and smelt of mould. After slitting it open, he removed a thick sheet of paper. Then, holding it up to his desk lamp, read it aloud.
Dear Mr Lovecrest, I have a need for your services. Unfortunately, my health prevents me from visiting you in London, so I ask that you visit me at my home. My health is failing fast, and I fear I am reaching the end of my time. It is for this reason that I wish to employ you in the settling of my affairs. I will pay you twice your usual rate, plus expenses. Please find further details on the reverse of this letter. Thank you in advance, Count Viktor Von Rutt.
The carriage jolted again, and the horse slowed.
Alexander pulled back the curtain and lowered the window. Outside, the forest was shrouded in swirling mist.
In the distance came the hoot of an owl.
